Batji Music
I was born into a musical family. My grand parents were skilled musicians in traditional and western music. They played a variety of instruments including the Ukelele, banjo, mandolin, piano and guitar to name a few.My father was a big influence for me musically. Although uneducated, he was very musical and a genius on the guitar.
Growing up, my influences were wide and varied including gospel, blues, country, rock and reggae. All the while maintaining a connection with traditional music.
My interest in poetry complemented my music and resulted in two albums. Spread the Word was released in 2006 and Long as the Sun Shines in 2007 with the help of local producer Cal Wiliams.
I hope to launch my third CD later this year.
My sisters Allison, June, Violet and Barbara are well known Top End performers. Their local hit song, Arafura Pearl was written by our mother 'Aunty' Kathy Mills.
I play regularly with a band known as The Collective. The band covers many genres of covers as well as original numbers.
I am also very involved with traditional Aboriginal music. Batji Welcome to Countryceremonies often include didj, clapstick and female singers.
